Tooth Colored Fillings in Eagle River AK

Tooth Colored Fillings Eagle River AKCavities can be an unfortunate fact of life. Even with great home care habits and routine professional cleanings, they can still occur. While ideally, we would like to prevent cavities from ever developing, if they do happen to occur, we want to catch them quickly and stop them in their tracks.

We also prefer to use techniques that are less invasive, allow you to retain more of your healthy tooth structure, and don’t leave your teeth permanently marred. For this reason, we use composite “tooth colored” fillings at Midnight Sun Dental Center.

Why Did I Get a Cavity?

It doesn’t seem fair, does it? You brush like you’re supposed to, visit the dentist regularly, and avoid sweets. The good news is that when you follow these preventive steps, you’ll get far fewer cavities than you would otherwise. The other good news is that with regular check-ups and our state-of-the-art DIAGNOdent technology, we’ll catch your cavities in the earliest possible stages. This allows us to treat any cavities as simply and conservatively as possible, saving you time, money, and discomfort.

Did you know that cavities, or dental caries, is actually an infectious disease caused by bacteria? Sugar is a contributing factor, but it’s not the root cause of cavities. What sugar does is provide a favorite food for the cavity-causing bacteria. The bacteria consume the sugar (which can come from starchy foods like bread, rice, and pasta as well as candy) and then excrete acid, which is what breaks down your enamel and causes decay.

According to the CDC, 90 percent of adults over the age of 20 will experience some level of decay, so you are definitely not alone.

The Advantages of Tooth-Colored Fillings

At our Eagle River dental office, we’ve made the switch from metal amalgam fillings to tooth-colored fillings, which are made from a composite resin that can be mixed to match the exact shade of your teeth. We don’t think your smile should have to suffer because of a cavity, and once these fillings are placed, nobody will ever be able to tell that you’ve had a cavity. In fact, these fillings are so versatile and look so natural, that we can use the material to make cosmetic improvements to your teeth, like concealing discolorations and filling in chips and cracks.

The nature of this modern filling material has several other advantages as well:

  • Tooth-colored fillings bond to your teeth while amalgam fillings require us to create an “anchor.” This means that tooth-colored fillings allow us to preserve more of your healthy tooth.
  • Tooth-colored fillings do not contain mercury. While no adverse effects have ever been linked to the mercury in dental fillings, many of our patients would prefer to avoid it altogether, and we respect and understand this viewpoint.
  • Amalgam fillings may fail, break, or leak, allowing bacteria to creep behind the filling and restart the decay process.
  • Amalgam fillings may increase the chance of your tooth cracking.

Simply put, tooth-colored fillings offer a better way to repair cavities, and we are excited to offer this service to our patients.
